The Wife He Ignored Became the Woman He Couldn't Reach novel Chapter 5

Jordan was practically a stranger to her.

She felt incredibly awkward.

But Jordan's expression didn't waver.

As if he hadn't noticed a thing, he casually unsealed the thermal container.

He carefully ladled out a bowl and offered it to her.

"Susan made some chicken soup. It'll help you regain your strength."

A rich, savory aroma immediately filled the room.

Deeply flattered and flustered, Serena hurriedly reached out to take the bowl.

"I've got it, thank you."

In her sheer panic, the blanket she had just hauled up slipped straight back down.

The motion caught the edge of her loose collar, tugging it dangerously low.

Never mind Jordan's vantage point from above—even Serena could see entirely too much of herself just by glancing down.

Her already flushed face flared with a burning heat.

She instinctively moved to yank the covers back up, but both her hands were occupied holding the hot soup.

She didn't dare look at Jordan, mortified enough to wish the floor would swallow her whole.

Thankfully, Jordan's phone buzzed right on cue.

His face gave nothing away as he checked the screen and turned toward the door.

"I need to take this."

Serena finally let out a shaky exhale the second his broad shoulders disappeared into the hallway.

She slammed the soup down, stripped off the awful gown, threw on her bra, and quickly changed into her own clothes.

Out in the hallway.

Jordan was quietly regulating his suddenly accelerated heartbeat.

The moment he answered the call, however, he seamlessly shifted back into his ruthless, calculating corporate persona.

"What is it?"

Serena finished the entire bowl of soup, but Jordan still hadn't returned.

Just as she began to wonder where he was, her phone pinged with a text from him.

"Something came up at the office. I had to leave. Susan will collect the container later."

Serena had added Jordan's number from the Sinclair family group chat years ago.

But they had never actually exchanged a single message.

This was their very first interaction.
