“Where are we going?” Marie asked weakly, letting Derrick pull her along.

“To the hospital, obviously,” he said. “You need to get checked out.”

“Hospital again? What, psychiatry this time?”

Derrick went quiet.

“I’m telling you now,” Marie muttered, “there’s nothing wrong with my head. I’m not throwing up because of stress.”

She knew her own mental state better than anyone.

Derrick sighed, half amused, half helpless. “Not psychiatry this time.”

He hadn’t realized before how good she was at holding grudges.

Then again, Sebastian really had it coming. The man was supposed to bring in a psychologist- but instead, he brought a psychiatrist. Ever since then, Marie had refused to set foot in a hospital again.

“Oh,” she said, sounding relieved for the first time.

Nobody liked being treated like a lunatic. Still, she couldn’t deny that she’d been under immense pressure lately.

Just thinking about it made her grind her teeth–Tessa.

That heartless brat hadn’t even sent a message from Victor’s side to let her know she was safe.

She’d thought Ashen Pact had kidnapped her–had gone crazy demanding they return her- and all that time Victor, the man she actually trusted, had played her for a fool.

The more she thought about it, the angrier she got.

In the car, Derrick glanced at her pouting face and pinched her cheek affectionately. “What ar you thinking about, huh? You’ve been fuming this whole time.”

Still mad about the psychiatrist? If that was it, then after they saw the doctor, he was going to make sure Sebastian paid for it.

“They all played me,” Marie said bitterly.

Derrick fell silent.

The way she said it–so small, so aggrieved–it tugged at something in him. But he knew who she meant most. Evie.

“Didn’t you get her back, though?” he asked.

Those two had been at each other’s throats since childhood. The fact that they weren’t mortal enemies by now was a miracle.

“Victor and Tessa played me too,” she huffed. “Both of them!”

Normally Marie wouldn’t have cared this much, but lately, she couldn’t stop stewing over it.

It just made her mad all over again.

Derrick reached over and ruffled her soft hair. “Stop thinking about it. I won’t mess with you.”

Marie shot him a flat look. Seriously?

“Kelly messed with my Stella so badly I’m still cleaning up the mess!”

She glared at him, heat rising in her voice. Honestly, when it came to Kelly… Marie almost felt sorry for her.

Born into the Tom family, and because of what happened years ago, that family didn’t even dare acknowledge her anymore.

Of course, that was partly because Abraham had been watching the Toms ever since the scandal.

Even if Mona pitied her daughter, she wouldn’t risk visiting her.

But truth be told… Mona didn’t seem all that heartbroken about it.

She’d never gone to see Kelly—not once. Not even secretly.

“Hey,” Derrick said, “Kelly’s not my sister. That whole mess wasn’t my fault. And besides, Stella’s the one who didn’t read the message I sent her–that’s on her, not me.”

The second he called Stella stupid, Marie’s eyes flashed.

Under that glare, Derrick quickly surrendered. “Okay, okay, I swear it wasn’t my fault.”

“Good. Then don’t ever pull that kind of stunt on me again.”

“I won’t.”

“And when we get to the hospital, no matter what happens, you listen to me. Got it?”

Marie still had a deep–seated aversion to hospitals, especially after the last time Derrick had tricked her into going.

He nodded solemnly. “Got it. I’ll respect your wishes. One hundred percent.”

She gave a little huff and turned to stare out the window, still sulking.

Derrick just sighed, thinking grimly that once they got back, he was going to wring Sebastian’s neck. The man couldn’t do a single thing right.

It didn’t take long to reach the hospital. Derrick’s assistant went to handle registration; this time, they signed her up for gastroenterology.

When Marie saw that, she finally relaxed.

Last time, Derrick had sweet–talked her into seeing a doctor only to send her straight to the psych ward–she still had trauma from it.

At least he was behaving himself today.

Once in the exam room, the doctor asked where she was feeling unwell. Marie described all he symptoms from the past few days.

“So you’re throwing up everything you eat?” the doctor confirmed. “Even water?”

Marie nodded. “Yeah. Everything.”

The doctor frowned. “That sounds serious. Let’s schedule a gastroscopy first.”

Marie froze. A gastroscopy? Wait–what?

“Can’t we… not do that?” she stammered.

The moment she heard it, her whole body tensed.

God, the last time she’d had that procedure–in middle school—had been pure torture.

Just thinking about it made her want to crawl out of her skin.

She thought. Over my dead body,never again.
