Ran away… Why would she run? It was only a paternity test–just a test! Why would she run from that? His laughter was so chilling it sent shivers down Artemis‘ spine. She didn’t even dare to respond.

After living with him all these years, she had never seen Dale like this before.

When she stayed silent, his fury only grew stronger; it spread through him like wildfire.

Finally, unable to contain it, he snatched up the ashtray on the coffee table and hurled it to the ground.

The crash echoed through the room; shards of glass flew in every direction. Some of the splinters struck Artemis‘ calf, and she gasped in pain.

Dale’s breathing was ragged. “Good. Very good.”

“Lenny!”

“Yes, sir!”

“Send people to assist Trevor. Have Ronnie go too.”

Ronnie was one of Dale’s most trusted men–someone with power, and men under his command.

Trevor had already gone after Lina.

With Ronnie now joining in, Lina didn’t stand a chance. She wouldn’t get far–especially not with Lana still injured and unable to move properly.

Artemis‘ face drained of color. Her chest felt tight as she stared at him. “You–how could you?”

“They’re not mine, are they?”

“They are yours!” Artemis snapped. “You’ve gone too far–why are you doing this?”

If Lina had run off alone, fine–but she’d taken Lana with her. That was what pushed Dale’s suspicions over the edge.

And now, it wasn’t just doubt it was certainty. He was sure those twins weren’t his.

“Father!” Manny stepped forward.

Dale suddenly turned on him, eyes blazing. “Manny, huh? Is he really my son?”

The question hit like a thunderclap. Artemis went pale, terrified.

She’d been thinking–even if the truth about the girls comes out, at least there’s still Manny.

But now, with Lina taking Lana and fleeing, Dale’s doubt had spread. He was questioning Manny too.

Artemis‘ whole body trembled. “If he’s not yours, then whose is he?”

“How the heck should I know?” Dale shot back. “I’d love to know whose he is! You woman-”

He broke off, coughing violently, the anger wracking his body.

Things had gone too far. Whatever love had existed between them—it shattered completely at that moment.

His outburst left Artemis frozen in shock.

She stared at him, horror in her eyes. “You–you’re unbelievable.”

“Run?” Dale sneered, steadying his breath. “Let’s see how far they get.”

They were in Redwood. As long as he gave the order, Lina wouldn’t make it far. Not alone; not here.

Artemis trembled uncontrollably.

Manny tried to step forward, but she grabbed his wrist and held him back, shaking her head.

Dale already doubted him; if Manny kept pushing, Dale might demand a paternity test with him next–and if that happened, they were finished.

Lina, why did you have to run…? Ever since Dale mentioned doing the paternity test, Artemis had been scheming in secret.

Every time she thought about how cold and heartless Dale had been–and now seeing him get burned by his first love–it was almost poetic.
