When the others saw Derrick return with Marie, their first thought was of the last time he’d come home — and how much stuff he’d taken from the Tom family. Gary’s face instantly went green with anger.
And then Marie said, “I’ve decided to move back home.”
The moment those words left her mouth, all three froze.
Mona’s face, in particular, darkened at once.
Holt frowned. “Move back?”
Marie nodded. “Of course. Derrick and I are married now; as the daughter-in-law of the Tom family, it’s only right for me to live here and fulfill my filial duties.”
Derrick went silent. Filial duties? Does she even hear herself right now?
Marie’s words made the others’ faces change as well. It was obvious none of them believed her. Filial duties... She’d be doing them a favor just by not causing trouble; and now she was talking about being filial?
Gary gave a sharp laugh. “Marie, let’s not joke around, alright? The Tom family isn’t a place for your jokes.”
He was practically grinding his teeth. The last time Marie and Derrick had left, they’d taken half the house with them; that resentment still hadn’t faded. And now she wanted to move back in? What a joke.
If she actually came to live here, none of them would have a single peaceful day left.
Marie looked straight at him. “Are you saying me being filial is a joke, or that moving back home is?”
Gary fell silent. Damn woman...
At her words, Holt glanced at Gary, clearly displeased.
As a father, he had always felt a pang of guilt about his strained relationship with Derrick. He wanted to be closer to his son — but Derrick never gave him the chance.
So when Marie suddenly said she and Derrick wanted to move back, his first reaction had been relief; but deep down, he also had a bad feeling about it.
Still, whatever his doubts, he wanted Derrick home.
So when Gary spoke up, Holt’s expression turned cold. “What nonsense! If you can’t keep your mouth shut, then don’t speak at all!”
“Father!”
Gary looked panicked. Did he really want Derrick and that witch from Falvaria to move back in?
If they did, the Tom family would be thrown into chaos.
Holt turned to Marie.
Marie smiled faintly. “After all, I’m carrying Derrick’s child now; as his wife, it wouldn’t look good for me to stay elsewhere. People might gossip.”
Holt blinked. “You’re pregnant?”
Damn her. How can someone from the Dawson family be this rude? Her face flushed with fury.
Then he turned to the butler. “Go clean up Derrick’s room. Make it ready.”
“Yes, sir.” The butler nodded.
And just like that, the decision was made — Marie and Derrick were moving back in.
Mona looked at Holt, clearly wanting to protest. But one sharp look from him shut her right up.
Even if she didn’t like it, she swallowed her words.
The fact that Holt had agreed to let Marie and Derrick move in was already infuriating enough — and yet, Marie wasn’t done.
She added casually, “Oh, there’s one more thing, Father. I need you to agree to it.”
“Whatever you need, just say it,” Holt replied.
Because Marie was pregnant, his tone toward her had softened considerably.
After all, she was carrying his grandchild.
Mona and Gary exchanged a look, both sensing that this sudden kindness from Holt could only mean trouble.
