That evening, after returning to Sycamore Quays, Natalie got ready to take Cup out for a walk.
Cecily had just returned with Adrian, who had finished his tutoring session with Trenton Yates. "Let's all go together," Cecily suggested.
Natalie glanced at Adrian. If Cecily had asked her to go alone with the boy, she would have flat-out refused.
But since Cecily was joining them, she wouldn't be stuck alone with him, so she nodded in agreement.
During the walk, Natalie stayed ahead of the other two, maintaining a comfortable distance.
Cecily knew this awkward dynamic was inevitable.
Looking down at Adrian, Cecily asked, "Do you miss your real mother?"
Adrian kept his eyes on the ground. "I'm thinking about the homework Mr. Yates assigned."
Cecily let out a small laugh. "Would you want Natalie to be your mother, then?"
"It doesn't matter," he replied, entirely devoid of emotion.
"You're such a strange child. Natalie hurt you before, and you don't even care?" Cecily pressed.
Adrian shook his head.
Realizing the boy was a person of few words, Cecily dropped the subject and looked ahead.
Cup was having the time of his life, bounding and leaping across the grass, his tail wagging furiously.
Perhaps infected by the puppy's sheer joy, Natalie started jogging along with him.
One person and one dog happily running ahead.
Watching them, Cecily felt her own mood lift. Initially, the family hadn't been thrilled about Hassan marrying Natalie—a wife who brought zero political or financial backing to their empire. But Natalie's beauty was undeniably striking, and it was human nature to admire beauty. Any child they had would undoubtedly be gorgeous.
But no one had expected that, four years into the marriage, they still wouldn't have a child.
Cecily sighed, glancing down at the boy she was holding by the hand, feeling a sense of helplessness.
After a while, Natalie felt a bit winded.
