Cecily was taken aback. She clearly had no idea about this and her breathing grew heavy. "That's probably just because Gardenia saved his life."
Natalie said nothing more.
Yvonne had already set down her bowl of broth. Her expression was grim. "As long as Hassan treats my Natalie well, I'm content. I don't need him to come visit me. Natalie, what's this about Gardenia?"
In her momentary frustration, Natalie had forgotten she was still in her grandmother's hospital room and had casually dropped Gardenia's name. She didn't want Yvonne to worry.
"It's nothing. I just misunderstood him earlier. Gardenia broke her legs trying to save him, so it's natural he treats her a bit better. Don't worry, Grandma. If I'm ever unhappy, I'll just leave on my own. You know my temper."
Yvonne reached out, her deeply wrinkled hand covering Natalie's. Her thin skin couldn't hide the prominent bones of her knuckles as she gently rubbed her granddaughter's hand.
Natalie had always been willful and mischievous growing up. Skipping class when she was in a bad mood was a regular occurrence.
Even her mother, Sabina, hadn't known what to do with her. Logically, a kid that naughty should have been disciplined harshly, but Sabina could never bear to hit her. Instead, she punished Natalie by making her write double the amount of copying assignments.
Natalie never did them honestly. She used her allowance to pay other kids to do the assignments for her.
Back then, while kids her age were playing with remote-control toy robots, Natalie was building real ones.
Sabina had been at her wit's end, eventually resorting to docking Natalie's allowance so she couldn't hire ghostwriters.
But Natalie always found a way. She told Hassan a different story, claiming her mother didn't want her eating junk food and had cut her allowance. Every time she asked Hassan for money, she said it was for snacks, but she secretly saved every penny.
Hassan was always generous with his money, genuinely believing she was just buying treats.
One time, Hassan accompanied Natalie to Yvonne's house.
During dinner, Hassan casually mentioned, "It's perfectly normal for growing kids to love snacks. As long as it's within healthy limits, they should be allowed to have some."
