Gardenia walked over. "Did you see the messages I sent? Tell me first, why didn't you reply? Okay?"

Hassan's brow furrowed, his lips parting in obvious irritation. "My phone broke."

Gardenia breathed a sigh of relief. At least he hadn't ignored her on purpose.

She could tell Hassan was in a foul mood and knew better than to push him too hard.

After all, he and Natalie had grown up together, and with Natalie using a suicide attempt as leverage, he was probably just worried about keeping her alive.

Gardenia didn't stay any longer to drain his affection for her.

Once she, Jude, and Zeke left, the hallway outside the operating room grew even emptier.

Hassan crouched down in front of Natalie. His gaze swept over the glaring wound on her pale neck, his frown deepening. His large hands gently gripped her shoulders, pulling her into a protective, comforting half-embrace.

"Let's go get an X-ray to see if you're hurt anywhere else," he said. It wasn't the first time he had suggested it.

Natalie remained silent. She was absolutely determined to stay right there.

Hassan's eyes flicked to the massive bloodstain on her chest, a vein popping on his forehead as his patience wore dangerously thin. "We'll come right back after the scans."

Natalie just shook her head, her eyes fixed intensely on the red "IN SURGERY" sign.

Hassan squeezed her shoulder tightly. "Natalie, please, just listen to me."

For some reason, those words set Natalie off. Fighting through the pain, she shoved him away violently.

"I don't need your pity! I don't want it!"
