When Natalie woke up, the only person in the hospital room with her was a hired caretaker.
"You're awake." The caretaker, who had been standing nearby, stepped up to the bed.
Natalie stared at her, her sluggish brain taking a moment to process everything before she immediately demanded, "Cora..."
"Don't worry," the caretaker assured her, "she's out of danger."
Anxious, Natalie threw off the blankets and got out of bed.
When she found Cora's room and went in, Cora was lying motionless in bed.
Natalie frowned as the on-duty nurse walked in behind her. "What's your relationship to the patient? We called her family repeatedly, but no one is picking up."
Natalie looked down and pulled out her phone to call Mrs. Vance.
It rang for a long time before someone finally answered.
"Hello? Natalie? Why are you calling me?" The background noise was loud.
"Cora is in the hospital," Natalie said flatly.
"Ah, what happened?" The voice on the other end dropped to a hush. "Natalie, if it's nothing urgent, I'm going to hang up. I'm at a parent-teacher conference for Harley, so it's a bit inconvenient. I'll call you back when it's over."
Harley was Cora's older brother's son.
Natalie leaned against the wall, her brow furrowed. "Cora was stabbed. It's very serious. She just got out of surgery and is bedridden right now."
"Oh, well, don't worry. You can head home. I'll drop by when I'm done here." The woman clearly hadn't grasped the severity of the situation.
Natalie took a deep breath. "Your daughter almost died. Are you not coming immediately?"
"It's not like I'm a doctor. Alright, I have to go, I'll be there later. Harley jumped up a dozen spots in his class rankings, and his teacher is about to give him an award. I'm hanging up now."
The line went dead.
