Jude leaned back lazily. "Is that right? Are you sure he doesn't have some ulterior motive? I just feel like this isn't something he would ever do."

It was one thing for Jude to mess around with Gardenia—he never cared much about his reputation or family legacy anyway. But Hassan was different.

Gardenia's tone cooled a fraction. "What motive could he possibly have? I'm not an idiot. He's done so much for me. If he really wanted something else, he would have said it by now. Besides, what do I have that he could possibly need?"

While Gardenia was quite confident in her own abilities, objectively speaking, Hassan could easily hire top-tier scientific experts if he wanted to.

So she believed that placing her in a core position really was due to his personal feelings for her, even if she wouldn't admit it out loud.

Jude's phone suddenly rang. Just as he was about to answer it, Gardenia snatched it away and powered it off. "Can't you just spend some quality time with me?"

Jude sighed. "Have I changed? Even if you did, I never would."

"How have I changed?"

"You've changed towards me." Jude let out a self-deprecating laugh. "Now, Hassan is the most important person to you, not me."

In the past, he could clearly feel that he was the center of his Flower's world.

Gardenia's eyelashes fluttered. "I can't control how my heart feels. And I haven't changed towards you. I've always considered you my best friend."

"Really?" Jude lowered his eyes, his lids hiding those striking amber irises, making him look far more desolate.

His voice was barely a whisper. "I thought you meant something else when you told me to wait for you under the banyan tree."

That day, even after finding out Number 12 was Gardenia, he had still gone to wait under the banyan tree.

But the first person he ran into wasn't her; it was Cora.

He had been surprised. "What are you doing here?"

Cora always kept her head bowed around him, so much so that he couldn't even see her expression. He only heard her voice, distorted from a severe cold.

"Just taking a walk."

Noticing the IV drip still taped to the back of her hand, Jude took a big step back, covering his nose and mouth. "You're out here when you're this sick? Don't pass it to me. Stay away."
