In the center of the main hall hung a portrait of the deceased, with a long ceremonial table placed right in front of it. The urn sat directly in the middle.
Jude stared at it for a long time, his mind completely blank. A heavy weight settled in his chest, a jumbled mess of emotions he couldn't even begin to untangle.
Mrs. Vance's voice suddenly cut through the air.
She was screaming hysterically, as if losing this daughter was the most agonizing thing in the world for her. "Jude! Where have you been these past few days?! Couldn't you have at least seen her one last time? Your phone was off; we couldn't reach you anywhere! If Cora knew you didn't even show up for her final moments, she'd be heartbroken!"
At the sound of Cora's name, Jude's heart gave a violent lurch, her smile flashing clearly in his mind.
And the woman with that smile was truly gone. She would never smile like that again.
Jude's fingers began to tremble slightly.
"Mia is devastated without her mother," Mrs. Vance continued. "She's been begging to see you these past few days, but we couldn't find you."
Jude kept his head down, his eyelashes fluttering rapidly. "How could this..."
The members of the Sheridan family were all present as well.
Mrs. Sheridan Sr. glared at him with furious disappointment. "Where exactly did you run off to?! We couldn't get a single call through for days."
Jude couldn't hear the voices swarming around him. He just stared blankly at the black-and-white photograph.
How could this be...
His hanging hand was suddenly grabbed by a tiny one. Looking down, he saw Mia clutching his hand. Her eyes were red and swollen, her eyelashes still wet. Her lips quivered as tears rolled down her cheeks. "I don't have a mommy anymore."
The words hit Jude like a physical blow.
He swayed slightly, his breathing growing heavy.
Suddenly, he locked eyes with Natalie, who was standing beside the funeral wreaths, and marched over to her. "This is fake, isn't it? Weren't you keeping watch over her at the hospital?!"
Natalie lowered her eyes. "I'm not a miracle worker."
