It was very late by the time Mrs. Vance finally arrived.
She carried her designer bag, her face meticulously made up, her hair styled flawlessly, and her attire elegantly put together.
Sitting on the bench, Natalie watched her approach. The first thing Mrs. Vance asked wasn't about Cora, but rather, "Why are you still waiting here? That's too much trouble for you."
Natalie looked at her with a flat expression. "Mrs. Vance, you should go check on Cora first."
Mrs. Vance glanced at the pale figure lying in the hospital bed. Surprised, she exclaimed, "How did it get this bad?"
Natalie's breathing grew heavy. "She's not out of the woods yet."
Mrs. Vance's eyes widened slightly. "Has Jude come to see her yet? I bet he hasn't. I knew she was useless, can't even keep her own man in check. She's lying in a hospital bed, and Jude hasn't even bothered to show up. This isn't going to actually end in divorce, is it?"
Mrs. Vance then smiled at Natalie. "If she were more like you, I'd have peace of mind. Look at how strictly you managed Hassan before; no other woman could even get close to him. But she's always been so petty, throwing a fit if she even has to talk to her own husband."
Cora kept her eyes closed, playing along with the charade, but hearing her mother's voice made her eyelashes flutter in sheer agony.
"No, I need to call Jude right now. She's hurt this badly; we can't let her suffer for nothing," Mrs. Vance said, her first thought jumping straight to the family's potential gain.
Natalie looked straight at her. "She is your daughter. When she gets hurt, she feels pain. When she hears awful things, it breaks her heart. Since you walked into this room, have you asked about her condition even once?"
Mrs. Vance felt deeply wronged. "What do you mean I don't care? I rushed all the way over here this late. Normally, I'd be asleep by now."
Natalie slowly turned her gaze back to the woman in the bed. Now, Cora could finally give up on her family completely.
Mrs. Vance had assumed her daughter was just a little banged up, but a second later, the medical monitors beside the bed suddenly started blaring. The room descended into instant chaos.
Startled, she stood frozen on the sidelines before frantically dialing Jude's number.
...
Gardenia sat on the sofa while Jude stared at his phone nearby.
He had brought her home, but he looked as though he was in a rush to leave.
"I'm a little hungry, Jude," Gardenia said, pointing toward the kitchen. "Could you make me some noodles?"
