Natalie froze instantly. She fell completely silent and was just about to hang up the phone.
Then, Hassan's voice filtered through the receiver. "What is it?"
He had taken the phone. There was a faint sound of footsteps.
"What kind of deal did you make with Gideon to get him to release her?" she asked in a low voice.
Hassan had likely stepped out onto the balcony, as the sound of the wind rustled through the speaker.
After a long pause, he finally spoke. "What, do you want to pay me back?"
He let out a soft, mocking scoff. "Do you honestly think you can afford to?"
Natalie pressed her lips together. "Whether I can afford it or not, you have to tell me first so I know."
"There's no need," his voice dropped, turning icy. "Didn't you say that once we divorce, we'll be strangers? With all this talk of owing and paying back, are you trying to find a way to stay entangled with me?"
Hearing this, Natalie's brow furrowed tightly. "Fine."
With that single word, she ended the call.
"How did it go?" Nancy walked in, noticing her deep frown. "What did he say?"
Natalie looked at her. "You don't owe him anything. He cheated on me, which means he already owed me. We'll use this to wipe the slate clean."
Nancy set the soup down on the nightstand and didn't say another word.
Natalie got out of bed, sat at the table, and slowly ate the warm soup.
"By the way, I made a lot extra. Do you want to take some to the hospital for your grandma later?" Nancy asked.
Natalie nodded. "Yeah, I'd like that."
