"So tell me the truth," he demanded stubbornly.

"Yeah," she said with forced ease. "I did."

Hassan let go of the card, gave a single nod, and turned away.

Natalie stood rooted to the spot, staring blankly at the business card. The cold wind blowing in through the open window swept her hair across her cheeks, tickling her skin.

After she had been gone for a while, Nancy came out looking for her. Seeing her standing by the window staring into space, Nancy walked over and lightly flicked her on the forehead. "Are you trying to catch a cold? Standing out here in the freezing wind."

"Let's go." Natalie nudged her back. "You hit pretty hard, you know. Isn't this the part where you're supposed to give me a gentle, affectionate tap?"

"Oh, please. I don't do gentle with you. If it doesn't hurt, you'll never learn your lesson."

Natalie froze for a second.

"When I was little, my mom used to say the exact same thing to me." A faint, wistful smile touched her lips. "Whenever she punished me, she'd always choose the thing I hated most, saying that if she didn't make it sting, I wouldn't learn from it."

She looked at Nancy. "When did you turn into my mother?"

Nancy visibly cringed. "No thanks. I'm still way too young for that."

The two of them headed back into the room.

As soon as Yvonne saw her, she asked, "What were you two talking about out there? Did he use his position to threaten you?"

Natalie smiled, walking over to give her a hug. "No, Grandma. He just gave me a business card."

She held it out to show her. "It's for a restaurant manager. I found out recently that Finn and Lyndon have been in contact, so I wanted to look into it."

Yvonne's expression noticeably faltered, a flash of cold panic crossing her eyes. "What do you mean?"
