At three in the morning, Natalie was jolted awake by the ringing of her phone.
Lately, her sleep had been incredibly light, plagued by constant nightmares. The moment the phone vibrated, she shuddered, tearing herself away from a suffocating dream. She was drenched in sweat, gasping for air.
She pushed her damp hair away from her sticky forehead and answered the call, her voice hoarse. "Hello?"
One sentence from the other end instantly cleared the fog from her head, sending her heart racing. "I'll be right there."
No one had expected an accident so close to the surgery.
When the doctor on duty did their rounds, they found Yvonne's room completely empty. After contacting the nurses, they immediately checked the security footage and called Natalie.
Without even washing her face, Natalie threw a knit cardigan over her pajamas and rushed to the hospital.
By the time she arrived, the police were already there.
The security footage showed a group of people disguised as doctors and nurses using specialized equipment to stealthily transport her grandmother out. The various medical monitors were perfect replicas, and their movements were so practiced that not even the passing patients or nurses noticed anything amiss. They had walked right out of the hospital without a single obstacle.
Staring at the footage, Natalie's legs gave out. Overwhelmed, she clawed frantically at her neck.
A doctor nearby glanced over and noticed large, red patches forming on her skin—a stress-induced breakout of hives.
She grabbed Natalie's hands to stop her. "Don't scratch. You'll break the skin."
She asked a nurse to bring some ointment for Natalie, then pulled out her phone to text Hassan.
"It's all my fault. I clearly saw something was off with Wendy. I should have paid closer attention." She shouldn't have let her guard down.
