He ultimately chose to text Nancy.
His presence was likely useless to Natalie now. The only one who could comfort her was Nancy.
By the time Nancy arrived, Natalie was sitting in the security room, watching the sketch artists compare the footage to draw the faces.
As Nancy stepped closer, she noticed Natalie was barely blinking. The whites of her eyes were bloodshot, and heavy exhaustion dragged at her features.
She walked over quietly and gently took her hand. "Natalie."
Natalie paused. The moment she turned and saw her, the tears spilled over. She sobbed like a child, her lips trembling, her body heaving as she threw her arms around Nancy and cried.
"I'm here. I'm going to stay right here with you, okay?" Nancy gently rubbed her back, pressing her cheek against hers. Both of their temples were damp with sweat, their skin sticking together.
Two hearts beating in sync.
As Nancy held her, the face of her own mother suddenly flashed in her mind—not her adoptive mother.
Her birth mother.
Even though she had memories of wandering the streets as a beggar, she had always retained a blurry image of her mother's face and voice. She remembered the faint, pleasant scent she wore when she held her.
"Isn't your little sister cute?" That voice echoed in her ears.
Holding Natalie, Nancy's chest tightened. She patted her gently, her fingers tangling in a strand of her hair.
Natalie's cries gradually softened into quiet, ragged sobs.
The way she wept, the way she clung to someone else for support—it was all burned into Hassan's dark eyes.
Sensing the woman in her arms had gone still, Nancy glanced to the side. Hassan was leaning against the wall, watching them.
