Natalie remained silent, her eyes burning with unshed tears.
Nancy walked over. "Mia, your mom... she passed away. Everyone knows that."
Neither of them had the heart to break it to the child, but they had no other choice.
Mia refused to let go of the painted paper. "You're lying to me. I'll tell Daddy to find Mommy."
That sentence thoroughly terrified both women.
Natalie immediately spoke up. "Are you sure about that? Your dad doesn't want to find your mom at all."
Mia was taken aback. She whimpered, "But Daddy looks at Mommy's photos all by himself, and so do I. Daddy misses Mommy just as much as I do."
Cora had only left behind a few photos, nothing else.
"Keep an eye on her," Natalie said to Nancy before taking her phone into the bedroom to make a call.
Just now, a new idea had formed in her mind.
Mia was Cora's only regret.
When Cora first disappeared, Mia's extreme reaction was enough to convince everyone she was truly gone. Perhaps they could let Mia know she was still around.
She didn't want Cora to look back years later and feel overwhelming regret when her daughter was all grown up.
Natalie called Cora and explained the situation.
Cora was equal parts shocked and overjoyed, her voice trembling. "Can I really? I..."
She couldn't even finish her sentence. The moment she spoke, her voice broke with sobs. "I miss Mia so much."
Natalie let out a soft sigh. "It's up to you to decide, but if Mia knows, the risk of you being exposed increases significantly."
She couldn't help but think that if this were Adrian, they wouldn't have to worry at all. That kid was far too mature and would never utter a careless word.
After a long silence.
From the living room, Mia's crying drifted in. "Why doesn't Mommy want me? I'll be good, I promise I'll listen from now on. I want Mommy..."
Cora couldn't hold back anymore. "I'm willing to take the risk. I want to talk to her."
...
"Mia."
