Gardenia stared at the photo, an endless wave of panic rising in her chest. Jude was treating the kid better and better.

He was absolutely not the type to value blood relations. His attitude toward the child was entirely dependent on his feelings toward the mother.

She didn't even dare to imagine what would have happened if Cora were still alive. Thank God she died early.

After reading Cora's diary, she had immediately burned it.

As long as Cora herself wasn't around to speak up, Gardenia could exploit the title of Jude's savior for the rest of her life.

Cora had always been deeply insecure and cowardly. When she saw Gardenia with Jude, she hadn't dared to say a word, which was exactly how Gardenia had managed to slip through the cracks and steal her place.

She dialed Jude's number.

"Jude, are you going to the class reunion?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I? It's a chance to see old friends."

"The class president said we could bring plus-ones. Are you taking Mia?" she asked cautiously.

Jude let out a soft laugh. "If she wants to go, I'll take her. If she doesn't, I won't."

Gardenia lowered her voice. "Let's go together?"

Jude went quiet for a moment before suddenly laughing. "Do you feel like I've been distancing myself from you lately, so you're deliberately trying to assert your presence?"

Gardenia clenched her jaw, unable to say a word.

"Gardenia, you don't need to do this. I'll remember the debt I owe you for the rest of my life. If you ever need anything, you can always come to me. But as for anything else, it's unnecessary."

"Why have you suddenly changed?" was the only question she managed to ask.

Jude held the phone, glancing at Mia by his side. "Actually, I haven't changed. I'm just cheap, same as you. Only after someone has walked away do I suddenly want to chase after them."

Gardenia hung up the phone, her face burning red with anger.

Jude was exactly this kind of person—utterly unfiltered.

He never used to speak so harshly to her before, but now, he held nothing back.

Hassan, at the very least, knew how to maintain a facade of decency.

She decided she didn't care about Jude's side of things anymore. Cora was dead, and no one else knew the truth of what happened back then.
