The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 124

The interrogation room door creaked open.

A police officer stood in the doorway and stated flatly, “Suzie Sterling, someone has posted your bail. Sign this document, and you can leave. However, you are not permitted to leave the country and must remain available for questioning.”

Suzie slowly lifted her exhausted eyes to look at the officer. He walked toward her, holding out a file and a pen.

It took several seconds for his words to register. Bail? Someone had come for her? Her whole body jolted awake. Who could it be? Oliver? Or Stella?

With a trembling hand, Suzie shakily signed her name.

She tried to push herself up from the chair, but her body felt weak and boneless. A wave of dizziness washed over her, and she had to try several times before she could stand. After closing her eyes, taking a few deep breaths, and flexing her stiff limbs, she finally found her footing.

Following the officer, Suzie walked unsteadily, her steps faltering like someone recovering from a long illness.

When she reached the main lobby, her eyes scanned the space. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw him.

Jamie?!

Even with the sunglasses and mask obscuring his features, she recognized him instantly. But why… why would he come to save her? And wasn't he supposed to be in the hospital?

Her gaze, full of confusion, fell on the bandage on his forehead and the sling supporting his left arm. Despite his injuries, he stood tall and imposing, an undeniable aura of power radiating from him.

For a fleeting, disorienting moment, she saw him not as her ex-husband but as a pillar of strength, a hero come to rescue her from the depths of despair.

But in a matter of seconds, a familiar, clean scent mixed with the faint smell of antiseptic washed over her. Jamie had already moved to block her path.

Forced to stop, Suzie kept her head down, her hands clutching the fabric of her shirt, her chin tucked so low it nearly touched her collarbone. She looked shaken and exhausted.

Jamie’s eyes, glinting with an unreadable emotion, were fixed on her, but he couldn’t see her face.

“Look at me,” he commanded, his voice gentle but firm.

Her mind still in turmoil, she mechanically obeyed, lifting her head.

The moment she did, the calm expression on Jamie's face vanished, replaced by a look of sheer fury.
