Though Chloe’s face was aglow with a happy smile, only she knew the sour bitterness deep in her heart. For days, she had tried every trick in the book to get closer to Jamie. But whether it was due to his poor health or some other reason, he seemed utterly unwilling to engage in any physical contact.
…
At the police station, inside the interrogation room, an officer held a file, his eyes lifting to study the woman before him. He handed the document to his partner. “Give this to her.”
The other officer took the file and placed it in front of Suzie. Still dazed, she looked down at the densely packed statement. It was a witness statement from Josie, implicating Suzie as the mastermind behind the sale of commercial secrets.
A cold smile touched Suzie’s lips as she gently tried to hand the file back to the officer.
He didn't take it. “Ms. Sterling, this isn't just for you to read. You need to sign it.”
“Officer,” Suzie replied flatly, “I didn’t do any of the things written here. Someone is intentionally framing me, but I don’t have any evidence yet.”
The officer who had handed her the file slowly took it back and returned to his colleague's side. The two men conferred in low voices, their words too quiet for Suzie to hear.
A few moments later, they gathered their files and notebooks and headed for the door.
As the door opened, one of them turned back. “Ms. Sterling, you will need to wait here until further notice.”
The moment dawn broke, Mia rushed to get dressed, skipping breakfast entirely. She ran towards the studio, planning to find Harrison and beg for his help.
But halfway there, she stopped dead in her tracks. Yesterday, that woman Chloe and Lexi had accused Suzie of stealing confidential files from Mirage Studio. The police had even taken Suzie away based on that claim. If that was the case, Harrison, as the owner of Mirage Studio, would never help Suzie.
Mia stood on the side of the road, stomping her foot in frustration. There was no way Suzie would do something like that. From the moment Suzie had joined the studio, Mia had been assigned to assist her. Suzie had always been considerate and kind, without a hint of arrogance. She’d worked for other photographers who had treated her like a servant, but Suzie was different. She was gentle and good-hearted.
After standing there for a long time, wrestling with her thoughts, Mia finally made a decision. With renewed determination, she stepped into the street and hailed a taxi.
