Suzie tried to sound composed as she retorted, but her heart wasn't in it. She had no confidence at all.
When she’d listened to the recording, Josie had initially refused to cooperate with the man. But from the tension in Josie’s voice, Suzie could tell that the files must have been confidential secrets from Mirage Studio. Otherwise, Josie wouldn't have been so terrified.
It was obvious that the stranger had been arranged by Lexi to ensnare Josie, setting her up to become a witness against Suzie. By now, the files were surely in Lexi's hands. With the photos from the exchange, the recording, and Josie's testimony, there was no way out for her.
She might really be facing prison time.
Just as her thoughts drifted to this terrifying possibility, the grip on her hand suddenly loosened.
Suzie slowly looked down. Jamie had let go of her and was now watching her with a blank expression, his lips moving.
“If that’s how you feel, then I’ll just inform the officer to cancel your bail. We’ll let them take their time with the investigation... maybe a week, maybe a month. Or maybe... you can just slowly rot in here.”
After speaking, Jamie lifted his wrist and glanced at his luxurious watch, looking like he couldn't wait to leave.
Suzie froze, a wave of fear and sorrow washing over her.
While she was still in a daze, she saw his feet turn and lift as if to walk away.
Suzie wanted to speak, but the words were caught in her throat. Her pride was the only thing stopping her from calling him back.
She wrung her hands together, so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her body trembled with fear.
She kept her head lowered in distress, and soon, Jamie’s legs were no longer in her line of sight.
He was gone.
He had really left.
Although the officer pulled him back within moments, she was badly shaken. After sternly reprimanding the inmate, the officer turned to Suzie.
“I’m so sorry, ma’am. We lost control of the prisoner for a moment. Are you alright?”
Suzie clutched the hem of her clothes, her heart still pounding as she shook her head frantically. The officer explained that the sleazy inmate had taken advantage of a moment of inattention to lunge at her and make a crude remark as they passed.
Just as the officer led the prisoner away, Suzie tried to take a deep breath, only to feel someone suddenly appear at her side.
Already on edge, she stumbled backward in fright.
“Don’t be afraid. It’s me.”
Jamie, who had rushed back, caught her just as she was about to fall, pulling her into the curve of his arm.
