By the time Suzie came to her senses, she was already pressed against his chest. She tried to struggle free, but Jamie had already lowered his injured arm from its sling.
In the next second, he swept her off her feet. No matter how much she struggled, he wouldn't let her go.
“If you keep moving, my arm will be crippled, and you’ll still end up in jail!” Jamie snapped, striding quickly out of the lobby toward his car.
Perhaps it was the word “jail” that made her freeze. Suzie finally stopped struggling.
He placed her in the car and slid in right after her.
“Drive!” Jamie commanded Aaron in the front seat. His voice was different now—deeper, and laced with a hint of strained patience.
Ignoring him, Suzie reached for the door handle, but the doors were locked. She was about to tell Aaron not to drive when he suddenly exclaimed, “Mr. Baylor! Your arm is bleeding through the gauze!”
Aaron had turned around from the driver’s seat, his voice filled with alarm.
“Mr. Baylor…” he began, then quickly turned his pleading gaze to Suzie. “Mrs. Baylor, his arm is badly injured. He shouldn’t have taken it out of the sling, and carrying you just now will…”
“Enough with the chatter! Drive!” Jamie cut him off sharply.
Suzie couldn't help but look at Jamie. He was tugging at the collar of his shirt, his brow furrowed as beads of sweat formed on his temples. His jaw was clenched, and the constant bobbing of his Adam's apple showed he was fighting back a hiss of pain.
“Aaron, could you please take me to Bloom Residence?”
But Aaron didn't answer. Or rather, he didn't dare to. Suzie saw him glance at Jamie for permission, and she followed his gaze. Jamie's face was even paler than before. He was leaning back against the seat with his eyes closed, his brows tightly knitted.
Suzie slowly looked away and added softly, “Or you could just unlock the door, Aaron. I’ll get out here.”
Her words had barely settled when Jamie spoke, his voice cold. “If you want revenge, then you’ll behave.”
After his terse statement, Jamie slightly opened his eyes and looked at Aaron. Suppressing the pain from his wound, he commanded in a low voice, “Drive!”
