The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 138

Suzie slowly lifted her gaze to meet his. He was looking right back at her, his eyes signaling for her to point out her tormentors. His expression was gentle, full of concern.

He was a completely different person from the man upstairs. What kind of act was this?

Her heart pounded in her chest as she slowly turned her attention back to the women standing before her. The moment she saw them, the humiliation from the previous day came rushing back, and a cold hatred began to spread through her.

It wasn't just her they had wronged, but her children too. They must have felt every bit of her fear.

Since Jamie had brought them all here and was putting on this show of defending her, she decided she might as well play her part.

Suzie closed her eyes, taking a moment to steady her emotions. When she opened them again, her eyes welled up with unshed tears. Looking shaken and deeply hurt, she pointed at Lexi with a trembling hand. “It was her. She insulted me, choked me, and hit me.”

They had played the part of a loving couple countless times for Richard. This was the first time they were performing for outsiders, but thanks to their previous experience, Suzie slipped into the role with ease.

At Suzie’s accusation, Lexi immediately lowered her head, trembling as she stammered, ‘I... I’m sorry, Suzie... no, Mrs. Baylor. I’m so sorry. I was stupid. It’s all my fault.

After a moment, Chloe responded politely, “Mrs. Baylor, I’m sure this should be enough to satisfy you. You’ve always been gracious and kind. Lexi just lost her temper for a moment. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to make things harder for her.”

Chloe seemed quite pleased with her answer. By putting Suzie on a pedestal in front of everyone, she had created a trap. If Suzie continued to press Lexi, she would be the one to lose face.

But Suzie didn't look the least bit embarrassed. She looked at Chloe and gave a sly smile.

In the next second, Suzie leaned into Jamie, her body almost flush against his chest. “Ms. Lockwood is quite the flatterer,” she murmured. “But, Jamie, what do you think?”
