But his deep, sharp eyes remained as cold as ever—perhaps even colder than before.
When Jamie’s gaze finally landed on her, it didn't wander. It settled directly on her stomach.
His intense stare sent a chill down her spine, and she instinctively shifted her feet, trying to escape his gaze.
Finally, his cool, detached voice filled the air. “Once the paternity test results are in, we’ll see whether this warrants punishment or reward. It all depends on that piece of paper.”
Suzie fell silent. She had mustered all her courage to make that request, but he was still consumed by doubt.
Fine. What difference would it make if he believed her anyway?
“You want a paternity test, I’ll do it,” Suzie said calmly. “Just let me know when you’ve arranged it, and I’ll be there. Thank you for the meal. I’d like to leave now. Please give me back my clothes and my bag.”
Jamie rose slowly from the sofa. “Change into the clothes on the corner cabinet,” he commanded. “Then come downstairs.”
With that, he turned and left the room without a backward glance.
Suzie stood frozen for a few seconds until the click of the closing door brought her back. She walked over to the cabinet and unfolded the black dress. It was her size—her current size, in fact. A soft, flowing maternity dress.
Beneath it was a box. Inside, she found a pair of soft, comfortable shoes that looked like they would fit her perfectly.
She thought back to his words. He hadn't refused her request to leave, so perhaps he was letting her go after all.
With renewed hope, Suzie changed quickly and hurried downstairs.
But when she reached the ground floor, she stopped dead in her tracks.
His voice echoed through the hall. “Suzie, come here. Who hit you? Who choked you?”
In the warmth of his palm, Suzie’s hand began to sweat. She wasn’t sure if it was the tension from his touch or the anxiety of not knowing what would happen next, but her hand trembled slightly.
His stern yet protective words still echoed in her ears, feeling like an illusion.
Was he… going to get revenge for her?!
Suzie was too stunned to move.
Jamie, who had always despised and belittled her, who had even hated her. Not only did he get her out of police custody, but now he was going to stand up for her?
She had to be dreaming.
