As soon as his fingers closed around hers, Jamie held her hand tightly. “Just talking about old times,” he replied calmly. “It’s nothing. I’ll take you upstairs to rest.”

He had only taken a few steps with Suzie when his phone rang. He gently released her hand and said softly, “I have to take this. You go on upstairs. I’ve asked the staff to prepare dessert; they’ll bring it up shortly.”

Suzie nodded, affecting a gentle smile and making sure a hint of tenderness flashed in her eyes.
