Had she really made a mistake? All she wanted was to eliminate any woman who might block her path to becoming Mrs. Baylor. But now…
As Chloe mulled this over, her defiant expression melted away, replaced once more by a look of profound grievance. Slowly, she reached out and clutched the sleeve of Jamie’s jacket, her voice a penitent whisper.
“Jamie, I’m so sorry… I wasn’t thinking straight, I really wasn’t. I know I was wrong. Please, just give me a chance to make things right, won’t you? I can go beg Suzie Sterling. I’ll get on my knees if that’s what it takes to earn her forgiveness. Please? Jamie…”
“It’s too late,” Jamie said, his two words falling like shards of ice.
His frigid demeanor shattered the last of Chloe’s hope. With a trembling hand, she released his sleeve and lowered her head, silent.
Moments later, as Jamie began to turn away, Chloe’s head snapped up, a desperate look in her eyes. Just as she was about to plead with him again, she noticed a maid bowing slightly in a certain direction. If she remembered correctly, that was the way to the first-floor restroom.
Chloe took a few small steps and peered in that direction. She saw it then. The restroom door was slightly ajar, and through the opening, a shadow cast by the light revealed someone was standing just inside.
There were no other members of the Baylor family in the villa right now. The only people a maid would bow to were Jamie and… Suzie.
Chloe wiped the tears from her face, cleared her throat, and called out to Jamie’s retreating back, her voice choked with emotion.
“Jamie! I’m pregnant!”
Her shout stopped Jamie in his tracks. In the restroom, both Suzie and Mia froze completely. Suzie, especially, bit her lip, standing motionless.
When an unmarried woman shouts “I’m pregnant” at a man, doesn’t that mean the child is his?
“Jamie… Jamie…” she called out in her usual delicate, cooing voice, hurrying to keep up.
By the time they reached the restroom, Suzie and Mia were just stepping out.
Jamie stopped, blocking Suzie’s path as she tried to walk away. “Suzie, you’re tired. Come upstairs with me and rest.”
He held out his hand to her, his eyes filled with an endless tenderness, his voice incredibly gentle.
Suzie’s brow twitched. Her gaze flickered past his outstretched hand to Chloe, who stood just behind him.
Chloe’s once-flawless makeup was now a tear-streaked mess. But the look she shot Suzie from behind Jamie’s back was one of pure, undisguised hatred, as if she wanted to tear her limb from limb.
