After a moment, Chloe touched her stinging cheek and snarled, “Suzie! I wouldn’t be so smug if I were you. If you didn’t hear what I told Jamie earlier, I can repeat it for you.”
As she spoke, Chloe’s eyes darted to Suzie’s stomach. She then placed her hand gently over her own belly, her tone dripping with arrogance.
“Listen carefully. I! Am! Pregnant! With! Jamie’s! Child!” Chloe enunciated every word slowly, as if afraid Suzie wouldn’t understand.
She expected this declaration to infuriate Suzie, maybe even send her into a state of shock that would land her in the hospital. But she just stared at Suzie’s face, searching for any flicker of emotion, and found none.
For Suzie, there was no need for a reminder. She had heard everything clearly from the restroom and had already felt that pathetic pang in her chest. A repeat performance couldn't hurt her any more.
Suzie slowly closed the distance between them, that same smile reappearing on her lips.
Perhaps because it was the same expression Suzie had worn right before slapping her, Chloe instinctively took a few steps back.
Suzie’s smile widened. “Oh? Is that so?” she murmured softly. “Well, that’s fine. The Baylor family would never let its bloodline wander. So, after you give birth, I can raise the child as my own. It’s a shame we don’t live in ancient times, though. I could have persuaded Jamie to take you as a concubine. At least then you wouldn’t have to suffer the indignity of being an unofficial mistress…”
“Suzie! You—!”
Chloe broke down, crying hysterically. “Jamie, it wasn’t me! I wasn’t trying to hit Suzie! She was insulting me, she hit me…”
Jamie’s brow furrowed, his gaze shifting between Chloe and Suzie.
Suzie, for her part, met his gaze with a look of pure anguish, her lips trembling as if she were too hurt to even speak. She looked every bit the pitiful victim, as if she had suffered terribly at Chloe’s hands.
On the floor, Chloe watched Suzie’s shamelessly theatrical performance and nearly choked with rage. “Jamie… I’m telling the truth! Don’t be fooled by Suzie’s act!”
