Suzie walked over slowly. Had he instructed the staff to prepare all this for her?
A bitter smile touched her lips. Looking at the lavish display, she felt no gratitude at all.
Instead, the nightmarish vision from the previous night replayed in her mind, now with new, chilling details. She felt like a vessel, a tool for someone else to have children. She would be pampered and cared for during the pregnancy, given the best of everything. But the moment the babies were born, Jamie would take them and discard her.
A lump formed in her throat, and tears welled in her eyes.
She glanced over the dazzling array of products, ultimately picking up only a toothbrush and toothpaste. She grabbed a fresh face cloth, splashed some water on her face, and headed downstairs.
The pendulum clock in the stairwell corner chimed softly, its hands pointing to 7:30.
Suzie walked down the stairs slowly, every step feeling harder than it should have.
As she neared the bottom, she looked toward the dining room. The sight of Jamie sitting there made her freeze.
Why was he here so early in the morning? Hadn’t he left?
Dressed in casual loungewear, Jamie sat at the dining table, his attention fixed on a news broadcast projected onto the wall.
Suzie was about to turn and retreat when Lucy’s voice reached her.
“Mrs. Baylor, you’re up! Please be careful on the stairs. Breakfast is ready, and Mr. Baylor is waiting for you.”
From then on, she would wake up whenever she pleased and come downstairs to a vast, silent, and empty living room. Jamie would come home late, work in his study, and leave before she was even awake.
That had been her married life.
Suzie’s steps faltered as her thoughts drifted, a wave of old memories washing over her. A loud growl from her stomach pulled her back to the present.
Lucy’s gentle voice sounded beside her again. “Oh, it sounds like our little ones are hungry. Come, let’s get you some breakfast.”
With that, Lucy gently took Suzie’s arm, guiding her down the last few steps while glancing at her belly with a warm smile.
When Suzie reached the bottom of the staircase and looked up, she found Jamie standing right in front of her.
