After speaking, a hint of cunning flickered within Suzie’s resentful eyes. She shot Jamie a quick glance and hurried downstairs.
He had somehow managed to pin this on her, something she knew nothing about. Just a moment ago, when the maid had announced Richard’s arrival, Jamie’s expression had been one of pure shock, mirroring her own. He had even shot her a look, silently signaling for her to hide. Yet, in a matter of minutes, the man’s entire demeanor had shifted.
As Suzie reached the living room sofa on the first floor, her eyes involuntarily drifted back upstairs. Jamie was still standing at the top of the staircase, his gaze fixed on her. It was a deep, unreadable look that she couldn't decipher.
She was truly exhausted. All she wanted was to get the paternity test over with, get the results immediately, and escape from him. After that, they could go their separate ways and never see each other again.
Upstairs, Jamie stood for another long moment before seeming to make a decision and returning to the study.
Now alone with Richard again, Jamie asked respectfully, “Grandpa, how did you find out about all this? Can you tell me? It’s very important.”
Richard, still visibly angry, just snorted and remained silent.
After a long pause, Jamie said, “Grandpa, give me one week. I’ll give you an explanation for everything then, alright?”
“What? You want to hide things from me now?” Richard shot back.
“Grandpa, you know my methods and my limits. Just trust me this one time. Please?”
Richard rose slowly and began to pace around the study. His steps were heavy and deliberate, as if each one carried an immense weight. Finally, he stopped, his face etched with worry.
And while he trusted Suzie, he had no idea what evidence his grandson might have that made him so insistent. The thought made his heart ache for Jamie.
“Alright,” Richard said, his voice heavy with resignation. “Since you have your own ideas, handle it your way. However, I expect you to resolve this quickly. Don’t let it tarnish our family’s name.”
Jamie nodded solemnly. “Don’t worry, Grandpa. I’ll give you a satisfactory answer as soon as possible.”
…
The next evening, at a private medical facility, Jamie instructed a translator to communicate with a specialist flown in from abroad. A paternity test was to be performed using the method that posed the least risk to the fetus.
