The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 171

Seeing Suzie’s silence, Richard shot another fierce glare at Jamie before speaking slowly.“Tell me. Why did you two get a divorce?”

Richard’s question startled Suzie, and even Jamie frowned in surprise. He quickly replied, “Grandpa, we didn’t get a divorce. Who have you been listening to?”

Richard’s expression was grim. “Hmph! You don’t need to worry about how I found out, you little brat. Just tell me why you divorced.”

As he spoke, Richard’s gaze drifted to Suzie’s stomach. “Besides, Suzie is already pregnant with your children. What exactly are you trying to do?”

Suzie looked at Richard in shock. How did he know everything?!

Only she and Jamie knew about the pregnancy here. And Aaron, of course. But Aaron was fiercely loyal to Jamie and would never say a word without his permission.

Her mind racing with anxiety, Suzie stole a glance at Jamie. He looked just as confused, pacing slowly in front of the desk.

After a long moment, he finally spoke. “Grandpa, I don’t know where you heard all this, but Suzie and I aren’t divorced. We just had a small disagreement. I brought her back, didn’t I? I even hired someone to look after her during the pregnancy.”

Richard studied Jamie with suspicion for a moment, then turned his attention to Suzie, his tone softening. “Suzie, my dear, before I came in, I asked the staff to prepare some dessert for you. Why don’t you go to the dining room and have some while I have a word with this foolish boy?”

Suzie slowly looked up, hesitated, and then rose from the sofa. She had only taken a couple of steps when Jamie rushed to her side, gently taking her arm. “I’ll walk you down,” he said softly.

Suzie met his gaze, her voice low and sharp with accusation. “And what, exactly, would I stand to gain from reporting to Richard?”

His stare never wavered. “Wouldn’t you? Maybe you thought you could use him to avoid the paternity test? Suzie…”

Even though she felt she’d been hurt so badly that nothing could wound her further, his accusation sent a hot rush of blood to her head.

Suzie took a moment to compose herself before speaking again, her voice chilling. “You don’t have to stand here endlessly speculating. If you push me too far, I might just refuse to do it. Or maybe I’ll just ask Richard to take me away right now.”
