As soon as Suzie finished speaking, she heard steady footsteps approaching from behind. Her hands paused for a fraction of a second before she resumed her task, pretending to continue organizing her clothes.
She didn’t need to look to know he was now standing right behind her, so close she could feel him. The unique, clean scent of his cologne and the sound of his steady breathing filled the air.
After a moment, she heard his voice beside her ear. “Suzie, being this depressed is bad for your health.”
As he spoke, his warm palms came to rest on her shoulders, and he gently turned her around to face him.
“Suzie…” he murmured her name softly.
She stared at him blankly for a moment, then slowly met his gaze. A strange, unreadable smile touched her lips. “Is that so? Well, once the paternity test results are back and I leave this place, I won’t be depressed anymore.”
With that, the smile on her face widened. Jamie stared at her, his brow gradually furrowing as if her odd expression disgusted him. The hands that were on her shoulders suddenly dropped away. His eyes darkened, a new layer of cold severity settling within them as he scrutinized the woman he no longer understood.
Suzie saw the shift in his expression and offered another knowing smile, as if she had expected his reaction. She gave him a dismissive glance and turned to walk toward the balcony.
Her words had barely left her mouth when Jamie was upon her, crossing the room in three impossibly fast strides. The coldness in his eyes vanished, replaced by raw, blazing anger.
Suzie swallowed hard. She knew that look—it was the one he got when he was pushed to the absolute edge of his fury.
Suddenly, an immense pressure crashed down on her, making it hard to breathe. But she forced herself to meet his gaze without flinching, a defiant glint in her eyes. Soon, Jamie’s breathing grew heavy and ragged, his chest heaving as he struggled to contain his anger.
Seeing him like this, the composure Suzie had fought so hard to maintain began to crack, overwhelmed by a rising tide of tension.
