The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 176

“Suzie, do you have any idea what you’re saying?” Jamie’s voice was laced with an anger he could barely contain. His chest heaved, a clear testament to how deeply her words had infuriated him. Looming over her, he glared down at her with bloodshot eyes blazing with anger.

Suzie risked a cautious glance at him. What was she saying? And what did he want to hear? Though he’d asked a question, his tone made it clear he was already convinced of her guilt. He had thrown such disgusting accusations at her more than once.

So why couldn’t she just agree with him? What else did he want from her? She was utterly exhausted by these confrontations.

“Jamie, I don’t think there’s anything left for us to talk about,” Suzie said, her voice turning cold as she issued an eviction notice. “I’m tired. Please leave.”

But as soon as the words left her lips, Jamie advanced on her again, backing her into a corner until her back was flat against the wall.

“Is that right? Nothing to talk about?” he sneered. “Why don’t you tell me, in detail, how other men please you? What makes them so much more appealing than me?”

The question was mocking, laced with a vulgar insinuation that dripped with contempt.

This time, however, Suzie didn’t get angry. In her early pregnancy, she had suffered several dizzy spells due to low blood sugar. Just as she had managed to get her health back on track, her emotions had become turbulent again. Her babies couldn’t handle another outburst of anger from her.

Slowly, she lifted her head and met his gaze, a faint, almost casual smile touching her lips. “Don’t you think you’re being a little childish, Jamie?”

She remained at the balcony railing, gazing at the horizon. For a long time after she finished speaking, the only sounds were his heavy breathing and the faint scent of his cologne drifting from behind her. There was no other response.

Perhaps her words had worked. Maybe now they could finally go their separate ways.

Or perhaps her speech had only fueled his fury, and his heavy breathing was the prelude to an explosion.

As Suzie stood there, lost in her anxious thoughts, Jamie, still behind her, silently pulled a cigarette from his pocket and began crushing it between his fingers.
