Suzie’s mind was racing when a thought struck her. She had heard that top-of-the-line equipment like that was always insured.
“Insurance!” she blurted out, as if finding a glimmer of light in the darkness.
But Jamie replied nonchalantly, “Whether the insurance pays out or not has nothing to do with you. And don’t even think about running. Fleeing from a massive debt like this could easily escalate into a criminal matter.”
His tone was casual, but his words sent a cold sweat down Suzie’s back. Who could she blame for this? It was just her own terrible luck. Even if the debt wasn’t to Jamie, anyone else would have pursued her just as relentlessly.
Standing by the bed, Jamie looked her over and spoke again. “We can discuss the specific repayment plan later.”
Suzie’s hands clenched the bedsheets, her knuckles turning white. She was speechless.
Aside from her two childhood friends and her loving brother Richard, it felt as if no one had ever treated her with kindness. She hadn't been treated well by people, and she certainly hadn’t been treated well by fate.
She had suffered endlessly at Margaret's hands, only to end up with a lunatic like Jamie when it was time for her to marry. Perhaps she had been too young, too foolish, her eyes and mind not yet fully open, to have fallen for a man like him.
He wasn't just arrogant; he was ill-tempered, heartless, and utterly self-centered, doing whatever he pleased without any regard for others or their feelings.
The more she thought about it, the more her anger simmered. Still, she managed to keep her expression calm as she spoke coldly, “Jamie, even if I owe your company money, that doesn’t give you the right to imprison me. I’m not going back to the manor with you. If you have the guts, go ahead and tie me up!”
An unreadable smile touched Jamie’s lips. “Fine,” he said simply. “As you wish. Tying you up and taking you back isn’t out of the question.”
“You!”
Suzie glanced at her and asked coolly, “Where’s Jamie?”
“Mr. Baylor said he had something to attend to and would be here shortly,” Lucy replied.
Suzie pressed her lips together and said no more. Just as she was about to walk toward the house, a frantic cry echoed from the main gate.
“Suzie! Suzie!”
Suzie frowned and slowly turned around. Margaret was pounding on the iron gate, her shrill voice reverberating across the estate.
