The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 197

Now he was eating something off the floor.

And when had his temper become so mild? In the past, if she had dared to knock something from his hand, he would have devoured her with his glare alone.

Suzie remained silent, her gaze occasionally drifting toward him. When Jamie had eaten half the apple, he wiped his hands with a wet wipe and spoke again.

“I’ve told you my decision. If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going.”

Seeing him stand up again, Suzie quickly called out, “Jamie, are you incapable of understanding what people say? We are divorced. What is your purpose in harassing me like this?”

Jamie straightened his clothes, his tone cool and detached. “I’m not harassing you. I’m simply taking you home.”

“Did I agree to that? Did you even ask for my consent?” Suzie retorted, trying to suppress the fire rising in her gut. The man before her was acting like a complete rogue, and she knew that any further argument would be futile. Anything she said would be useless.

Jamie was quiet for a long moment before replying, “Consider it repaying a debt.”

A debt? Suzie’s eyes widened.

“Repaying a debt? What debt? What could I possibly owe you?” she demanded.

Wasn’t suppressing her enough for him? Did he have to invent a debt to hold over her head?

Suddenly, it dawned on her that he might be referring to the hospital fees. “Are you talking about the hospital bill?” she asked quickly. “Don’t worry, I’ll pay you back as soon as I’m discharged.”

In response, Jamie slowly pulled a document from his pocket and handed it to her. “This is the invoice. It has an official seal. Besides, you’re a professional photographer. You should know the caliber of the equipment better than I do.”

His voice was calm and deep, betraying no emotion.

Suzie’s hands trembled as she cautiously took the document. She held it between her fingertips, almost too scared to look. The fact that he could produce it meant the price was likely just as he said.

Despite her fear, she forced her eyes to scan the paper before quickly handing it back. This time, she was utterly silent. She didn’t know what to say. She was completely lost, with no idea what her future held.

How could she ever repay that kind of money? Even if she could start working immediately, twenty-four hours a day, she would probably be paying it off until she was old.
