But now, with Jamie on her side, Margaret knew she had to change her approach. She couldn't order Suzie around like a servant anymore. After all, with Suzie back in the Baylor family's good graces, there was a chance Margaret could squeeze even more benefits out of this connection.
With that thought, Margaret’s expression transformed into one of profound emotion. She grabbed Suzie’s hand, her voice thick with sincerity. “Suzie, dear, our family isn’t wealthy, and you suffered a lot. If you must blame someone, blame me. It’s my fault I wasn’t capable enough to give you a better life.”
A flicker of cold light flashed in Suzie’s eyes, but her tone remained nonchalant. “It’s all in the past. Let’s not talk about it. We should eat.”
As she spoke, she gently pulled her hand away. The genuine hunger she’d felt earlier was rapidly being replaced by a wave of nausea.
Once the atmosphere had settled, a faint smile touched Suzie’s lips. She turned to Jamie, her voice soft. “Jamie, my sister just got back to the country, and we haven’t seen each other in a long time. Would it be alright if she stayed at Baylor Manor for a few days?”
Surprise flickered in Jamie’s eyes before vanishing. “You’re the mistress of this house,” he replied smoothly. “It’s your decision.”
Suzie nodded with a gracious smile, but when they thought no one was looking, their eyes met, each filled with their own hidden agenda.
When Suzie looked back down at her plate, she found Jamie had added more food to it.
She kept her expression pleasant, feigning cheerful acceptance. She had no energy to fight with anyone, nor did she care what game Jamie was playing. Her mind was focused on one thing: getting out of here. If she managed to escape this time, she would leave the city for good and put as much distance as possible between herself and everyone in it.
As Suzie plotted, Margaret spoke up again. “Suzie, dear, it looks like you’ve put on some weight. I noticed it the moment I saw you. Are you pregnant?”
