“So you just forgave him like that?” Ruby mused. “Then again, I guess it makes sense. A man that exceptional is bound to have women throwing themselves at him. And honestly, how many men can resist that?”
“But you were smart, Suzie,” she continued. “You didn’t actually go through with the divorce. That would have been a huge loss. You’d be a divorcée, and where would you find another man with his kind of status? For a life of luxury like this, putting up with it is worth it.”
Suzie frowned. Ruby certainly had inherited Margaret’s way with words, and their mindsets seemed frighteningly similar. Though Ruby and Stewart were twins, their levels of maturity were worlds apart.
But Suzie decided not to say anything more. Soon enough, both Margaret and Ruby would be people from a past life, with no connection to her future.
After a few more minutes of small talk, Suzie showed Ruby to the guest room. Once she was settled, Suzie returned to her own bedroom.
She sat for a moment before heading into the bathroom for a shower. In the mirror, she studied her abdomen, which was now quite prominent. As she washed, her mind raced. She had to do or say something to make Jamie lower his guard. Only then could she begin to execute her plan to leave.
Lost in thought, she realized she had been in the shower for nearly half an hour. When she emerged, wrapped in a bathrobe, she was startled to find Jamie sitting on the sofa. The sound of the door closing made him turn to look at her.
Instinctively, Suzie clutched the collar of her robe and retreated back into the bathroom. After quickly putting on a bra, she stepped out again, her heart pounding.
Suppressing all the resentment she felt for him, she asked in a soft voice, “Did you need to talk to me about something?”
As she spoke, she began towel-drying her hair.
