The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 210

Suzie paused, tilting her face up to his, her lovely voice growing even gentler. “If you’re not willing to do another DNA test now, we can wait until the babies are born. Also, you’re an incredibly capable man, so I hope you can find out who that woman in the photos is and why she looks exactly like me…”

She spoke with such sincerity and tenderness, her words like a soft spring breeze. As she finished, she secretly watched his expression. A flicker of doubt seemed to cross his calm eyes, as if he were contemplating something.

Just as she was observing him, Jamie spoke. “Did Margaret teach you to say all this?”

Suzie’s brow twitched almost imperceptibly. She rose gracefully and began to pace the room. “She didn’t teach me,” she said, continuing her performance. “But I do have my own selfish reasons. You’ve arranged for people to take meticulous care of me, and you even thoughtfully brought my family to see me. Since you’re able to treat me with such calm and consideration, I… I feel nothing but gratitude toward you.”

“Besides,” she added, “if I stay angry with you and leave, where would I even go? I can’t make much money from working, and raising children would be a struggle. You’re willing to generously let me stay here, so I might as well accept it gratefully. I even have people to wait on me. Why would I be foolish enough to refuse such a blessing?”

Suzie took a deep breath, and the words she had rehearsed in her mind tumbled out in a rush. After she finished, a long silence stretched on, with no response from Jamie.

Feigning disappointment, she added, “Of course, if you find me distasteful, you can kick me out at any time. Even then, I wouldn’t blame you.”

Having said everything she planned, she silently hoped that her earnest confession was enough to convince him she was willing to stay.
