You’ve arranged for people to take meticulous care of me, and you even thoughtfully brought my family to see me. Since you’re able to treat me with such calm and consideration, I… I feel nothing but gratitude toward you.”

“Besides,” she added, “if I stay angry with you and leave, where would I even go? I can’t make much money from working, and raising children would be a struggle. You’re willing to generously let me stay here, so I might as well accept it gratefully. I even have people to wait on me. Why would I be foolish enough to refuse such a blessing?”

Suzie took a deep breath, and the words she had rehearsed in her mind tumbled out in a rush. After she finished, a long silence stretched on, with no response from Jamie.
