Sure enough, Martha quickly stood up and said warmly to the man, "Sir, if you go into the main hall and walk straight, you'll find it on your left, by the large glass vase."
"Thanks."
Hearing the man's thanks, Suzie assumed he would leave. Without raising her head, she said, "Martha, can you look at this squid? I feel like the body isn't cooked yet, but the tips of the tentacles are about to burn."
When no reply came, Suzie looked up, only to find herself face-to-face with a handsome man. It was Chester. He was leaning over, his eyes fixed on the squid in her hand. "New here? You have to grill it like this."
With that, Chester took the metal skewer from Suzie's hand and sat down right next to her. He expertly picked up a pair of nearby scissors and snipped off the burnt tips from all the squid tentacles. Then, he held the skewers suspended over the grill, turning them gently.
"See? This is how you have to grill it for the best taste. You can't just put it directly on the grate. Also, the coals are too hot, you need to adjust them."
Suzie nodded. "You're a guest, sir. I can handle it."
Her response was cool as she took the skewer back from him. As she did, her slender, fair fingers came into Chester's line of sight.
"Your hands don't look like they've done this kind of work for long. How did you end up in a job like this?"
Suzie kept her eyes focused on the squid. Although his tone was polite enough, she disliked this kind of pickup line and remained silent.
From the dining table, Jamie had been watching Chester ever since he'd approached the grill. When he saw his friend's eyes practically glued to Suzie's hands, his voice rang out, sharp and loud. "Chester, weren't you looking for the restroom?!"
Chester jumped at the sound and looked up. "Oh, right, right. I almost forgot."
