The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 224

Chester clapped his hands and leaned back lazily in his chair, lacing his fingers behind his head. "Not all of us act like old men in their prime," he said casually. "Haven't you heard? A man is a boy at heart, right up until he dies."

Jamie took a final drag from his cigarette and stubbed it out in the ashtray. "What's so great about being a boy? They're impulsive and foolish."

"And you?" Chester challenged. "Are you still impulsive? I'm not talking about business, of course. I'm talking about… women."

Just as Chester's words hung in the air, the staff began bringing platters of grilled food and cold appetizers to the table. Jamie seized the opportunity, clearing his throat. "Let's eat. While it's hot."

"Bowen, Yancy, you see that?" Chester heckled. "Jamie's dodging my question."

Bowen and Yancy exchanged a look and shook their heads in mock helplessness.

Seeing them all chatting happily, Ruby beamed and diligently handed each of them skewers of food. The sight of her parading around in Suzie's dress grated on Jamie more and more.

"Go find a servant to help you," he ordered, his tone sharp. "And bring back some more wine from the house."

Noticing the stern look on his face, Ruby didn't dare argue. She had heard all about Jamie's temper, and it wouldn't be worth it if he got angry and sent her home.

Meanwhile, Suzie hadn't stopped grilling. Martha, sitting beside her, wanted to take over but was afraid of blowing Suzie's cover and upsetting Jamie. She tried to help as much as she could without being obvious.
