“Yes, what about it?” Suzie asked.
“Well, one of those times, it was a lawyer who delivered them, right? And he left a business card. On a whim, I gave him a call. I didn’t tell him who I was, of course—I just posed as someone asking for a consultation. I asked if assets transferred to a spouse after a divorce could be taken back.”
Suzie held her breath as Stella paused for effect before continuing. “He told me that as long as the husband didn’t retract the transfer, any property already in the wife’s name would remain hers. So, I had Oliver get some friends to look into it. And guess what? All those assets Jamie gave you—the houses, the cars, all of it—are still in your name. And so is a massive check.”
Suzie processed what Stella was saying. Was she suggesting Suzie could use that money to pay for the supposedly damaged equipment? If so, she could finally be free. With no debt hanging over her, Jamie would have no excuse to bother Stella.
It could work.
He was the one who owed her for this failed marriage, so it was only right that she accept the compensation. The only reason she’d refused the money during the divorce was to make a clean break from him. But now, using it felt not just possible, but necessary.
She didn't want the properties, just the check. It would be more than enough to cover the equipment and support her and the children after she left the city.
A new worry surfaced. “Stella,” she asked urgently, “are you sure I’ll be able to cash that check without any trouble?”
“Yes, I’ve already consulted another lawyer. We can claim it directly through Jamie’s own attorney. But…”
