The group drank late into the night before finally dispersing.

The household staff, completely unaware of the true nature of Jamie and Suzie’s relationship, followed Martha’s instructions and worked together to carry the drunken Jamie upstairs.

Suzie had already gone to bed, but the commotion and knocking at her door startled her awake. Thinking something was wrong, she quickly switched on the bedside lamp, threw on a nightgown, and went to open the door.

Before she could even process what was happening, several servants were helping Jamie into the room and laying him on the bed.

Suzie was about to tell them to take him somewhere else, but they all rushed out as if in a great hurry, pulling the door shut behind them.

Sighing in frustration, Suzie walked slowly back to the bed. She looked down at the disheveled, deeply sleeping Jamie and felt a surge of annoyance. Honestly, what were they thinking? Didn’t they know he always slept in the study? Even before the divorce, he’d always used the study as his bedroom.

She paced for a moment before deciding to go find Martha. After knocking and entering Martha's room, Suzie got straight to the point.

“Martha, he usually has a busy morning and prefers to sleep alone, which is why he always stays in the study. Everyone knows that, right? Why did they bring him to my bedroom tonight?”

Martha, who was still awake, quickly explained, “Mrs. Baylor, it was his own request. He told us to bring him to the master bedroom while he was still out in the garden.”

“Was he coherent when he said that?” Suzie asked.

Martha frowned, recalling the moment. “He didn't seem that drunk… He personally saw his friends to the gate. It was only after they left that he said he felt dizzy and couldn't stand.”

What kind of game was Jamie playing now? Was he using a little alcohol as an excuse to act out? Or was he trying to take advantage of her?
