“Take a nice bath. Pregnant women shouldn’t soak for too long. I’ll be waiting right outside the door. I’ll leave as soon as you come out.” Before Suzie could say anything, Jamie had already left the room, closing the door behind him.
Suzie stood frozen for a long time before slowly walking to the mirror. As she let the robe fall away, she was horrified by the sight of the dark red love bites dotting her skin. Against his strength, she had been utterly powerless. What if he hadn’t stopped at the last moment? A shiver ran through her. After another long pause, she finally stepped into the large bathtub.
From outside the door, Jamie’s voice came intermittently. “Suzie… don’t soak for too long. You might get dizzy.”
“Suzie… answer me, or I’m coming in.”
Worried he would actually barge in, Suzie would occasionally offer a cold, one-word reply. Mindful of the babies, she didn’t dare stay in the water for too long. But her mind was in turmoil, and she ended up staying in the bathroom for a good while before finally emerging.
When Suzie, wrapped in a bathrobe, stepped out, she found Jamie waiting for her right by the door, just as he’d said. He wasn’t sitting on the sofa or the bed, but standing guard at the entrance. She walked past him toward the vanity, but Jamie quickly followed, picking up the hairdryer.
“You sit. I’ll dry your hair for you,” he said gently.
Suzie snatched the hairdryer from his hand. “No, thank you. Please leave this room.” With that, she sat down and switched it on.
After a moment of silence, Jamie spoke from behind her. “I’ll have someone install a stand hairdryer tomorrow. It must be tiring for you to hold your arms up like that now.”
Suzie ignored him. He paused, then added, “I’ll have Lucy bring you something to drink. Have some and get some rest.”
