At the same time, in Mornhaven, at the Baylor Manor.
The household staff stood in a line with their heads bowed. At the end of the line, Ruby and Martha stood together.
Jamie’s knuckles rapped against the tabletop, his voice sharp as a blade. “Who wants to go first?”
The servants all kept their heads down, too afraid to speak. Finally, Martha broke the silence, her voice soft.
“Mr. Baylor, everything seemed normal before and after Mrs. Baylor left. She didn’t say anything to me.”
Martha couldn’t understand it. Suzie had gone out perfectly fine, accompanied by two bodyguards. How could she have just vanished? Furthermore, after Suzie had left, Martha had gone upstairs to clean the bedroom and noticed that none of her clothes were missing. It seemed she had only taken a small bag with her.
She glanced at Jamie’s grim expression and dared not say anything more.
Having gotten no information from Martha, Jamie’s cold gaze shifted to Ruby. “You. Talk.”
Ruby was clearly terrified by Jamie’s presence. She stammered, “Suzie… Suzie just said she was going out to buy something. She didn’t tell me anything else. She hasn’t mentioned anything about leaving these past few days…”
Overwhelmed by Jamie’s intimidating aura, Ruby burst into tears before she could even finish her sentence.
A surge of irritation hit Jamie. He shouted toward the door, “Butler, have a car take her home!”
The butler, who had also been standing with his head bowed, immediately responded, “Yes, Mr. Baylor.”
Ruby wiped her tears and mumbled, “I’ll just go upstairs and get my luggage…”
With that, she ran upstairs, grabbed a suitcase full of things she had bought on her last outing, as well as items from the cloakroom, and hurried back down to leave with the butler.
