The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 28

So this was his important guest?

After a moment's hesitation, Suzie stood and followed them. She caught up to them just as they reached a car parked by the curb.

"Jamie!"

If she had waited a second longer, they would have already been inside.

At her call, both Jamie and Chloe turned around. Chloe's hand was still looped through his arm, and from an angle Jamie couldn't see, she shot Suzie a triumphant, provocative glare.

"Why weren't you at City Hall?" Suzie demanded.

Jamie turned slightly, gesturing for Chloe to get in the car first.

The way Chloe nodded obediently was a picture of cloying sweetness that made Suzie's stomach turn. She could hardly bear to watch.

Once the car door was shut, Jamie finally turned his attention to her. "I made it clear last night. We're postponing the divorce."

"And did I agree to that?" Suzie shot back. "I made myself perfectly clear when I left the hospital!"

Jamie, hands tucked in his pockets, replied coolly, "If you recall, I didn't agree either."

Suzie stared at his face, which seemed to hold a hint of amusement, and felt her anger boiling over.

"What is it that you want? The woman you've been dreaming of is right by your side! Shouldn't you be rushing to get a marriage license and make it official? Or do you want the media to find out that the great CEO Jamie Baylor is cheating on his wife, abandoning his—"

Her voice caught in her throat. What was she saying? She was so furious she had almost blurted out the truth about their child. If he knew, she could already picture Chloe becoming her child's stepmother, raising them under the same cruel hand she herself had endured.

He didn't see? He didn't even hear that loud noise?

Impossible.

So this was how heartless he could be.

Suzie lifted her face, slick with sweat, and looked up.

The luxury car glided past her. The windows were tinted, but she could just make out his profile—a handsome, chiseled face that was as beautiful as it was cold.

Slowly, Suzie lowered her tear-filled eyes and struggled to pick up the scattered pieces of candy from the ground.
