The words struck Suzie, leaving her stunned and at a loss for what to do. For a moment, she was completely lost in a daze.
“Suzie?”
“Yes? Please, continue,” Suzie replied softly, wiping her tears.
Helen slowly raised a hand to stroke Suzie’s hair. “From your silence just now, I can guess your feelings. I know you don’t feel that way about Oliver, and I’m not trying to pressure you by telling you I’m sick. It’s just… if I don’t say these things, my heart won’t be at ease.”
“Putting Oliver aside, my heart aches for you, too. It’s not easy raising three children on your own. I thought that if Oliver could take care of you, your life would be much easier. This isn’t just me being selfless; it’s because I know Oliver only has eyes for you. If you two could complement each other, it would be a great relief to me.”
Helen spoke with sincerity, but Suzie was still taken aback.
Even if Oliver was currently unwilling to find a girlfriend, she couldn't believe a parent would be so accepting of their son marrying a divorcée with three children. Besides, she was nearly thirty. Liking him or not aside, her circumstances made her an unworthy match for the successful and well-off Oliver.
Suzie paused before speaking slowly, “Helen, your words touch me deeply, it’s just…”
“Suzie,” Helen interrupted. “I watched you grow up. Your own mother may be unreliable, but you’ve always been kind and good-hearted. Your circumstances don’t matter to me. What matters is the kind of person you are. Oliver would be lucky to have you.”
Seeming to fear Suzie’s rejection, Helen began to cough violently after she finished speaking, then said she needed to rest. As she watched Helen lie back down wearily, Suzie discreetly placed the jade bracelet she had brought on the bedside table.
She carefully pulled the thin blanket over her before quietly leaving the bedroom.
Downstairs, only Oliver remained.
