Hayden glanced at the vacant-looking Suzie and asked Mia in a low voice, “What is it, Mia?”

Mia pressed her lips together, conflicted. She didn’t know how much Hayden knew about Suzie’s past, but it was obvious to everyone that he treated her exceptionally well—not like a man interested in a woman, but like a brother doting on his younger sister.

She began tentatively, “Suzie…”

There was no response. At this point, Mia figured Suzie wouldn’t blame her for speaking up.

“Suzie, I’m going to tell Mr. Wycliffe, okay?”

Suzie still didn’t reply, but she made no move to stop her. Instead, she quickly rose from her chair, put on her mask and hat, and said in a low voice, “I’m going to the restroom.”

As soon as the door closed behind her, Hayden pressed on. “Mia, you see the state she’s in. Tell me everything you know right now. Don’t hold anything back. I’ve always felt like someone hurt her. Tell me, and I’ll make it right.”

Mia was silent for a moment, then took a deep breath and finally revealed the truth. “Mr. Wycliffe… Jamie from the Baylor Group is Suzie’s ex-husband.”

“What?! Isn’t Jamie famously a bachelor? He was married?!” Hayden was in disbelief. He grabbed his water cup and chugged several mouthfuls. Besides, Suzie had told him her husband was dead.

“It was a secret marriage,” Mia continued. “I don’t know all the details, but some bad things happened before…”

Hayden gave Mia a look, and she immediately understood, nodding before quietly leaving the office.

After finishing his water, Hayden rose slowly and walked over to Suzie’s side. He looked out at the view as well, and after a long silence, he spoke.

“Suzie… my family didn’t approve when I started this business, but everything I’ve built has proven my abilities. Of course, half the credit goes to you. What I’m trying to say is, I think I can help you with this.”

Suzie turned her head slightly to look at him. The ghastly pallor of her face had subsided, replaced by an expression that was almost too calm.
