Exactly as she had anticipated, Suzanne was wearing ridiculously high stilettos. The sudden impact knocked her completely off balance.
Suzanne stumbled backward several steps, and the medical form in her hand fluttered to the floor.
While the man scrambled to steady her, Suzie immediately dropped to a crouch to retrieve the paper, offering a stream of breathless, sincere apologies.
Before Suzanne could register what she was doing, Suzie quickly shifted the focus.
"Oh my gosh, did you twist your ankle? Here, quickly, take a seat on this bench."
"Watch where you're going, you idiot," the woman snapped, rolling her eyes at Suzie as she hobbled toward the bench against the wall.
"I am so incredibly sorry. I'm legally blind. Are you hurt?" Suzie kept the brim of her hat pulled low. She maintained her apologetic tone while her eyes rapidly scanned the medical file. Suzanne's age, phone number and address were all there.
The moment Suzie committed the details to memory, Suzanne snatched the paperwork out of her grasp.
Suzanne glared at her in disgust. "Legally blind? You seem completely blind to me. Get away from me."
Seeing Suzanne's explosive temper, Suzie decided not to push her luck with further conversation.
She gave the couple a brief nod, cast a quick glance at Suzanne's ankle to ensure there was no real damage, and then briskly walked down the corridor.
As she walked, Suzie pondered the revelation. Suzanne was twenty-five years old?
That made her four years younger than Suzie. The woman in those old photographs had looked exactly her age.
Medical records were printed directly from official IDs, so there was no way the age was a typo.
If she was several years younger, there was zero possibility of them being twin sisters.
But then how could they look so terrifyingly identical?
Suzie thought back to the moment they were standing side-by-side. Their heights were nearly an exact match.
Incredibly, their body types were strikingly similar as well.
However, if someone who truly knew Suzie took a closer look, the subtle differences in their features were obvious.
"Oliver? I'm in the suite. Where are you and your parents?"
"My mom," Oliver's voice cracked, sounding utterly devastated. "She's in the emergency room."
Suzie's heart hammered frantically against her ribs, and a heavy lump instantly formed in her throat.
"Oliver, hold on. I'm coming right now," she promised, her voice trembling with comfort.
She hung up the phone and sprinted toward the elevators, panic fueling her steps.
When she had visited two days ago, Helen had already been struggling to eat for several days.
Suzie didn't need a medical degree to understand what an emergency resuscitation meant at this stage.
When the elevator doors finally slid open on the designated floor, she immediately spotted Oliver. He was slumped against the wall in the distance, his head buried in his hands.
Stella looked up from down the hall, her eyes already brimming with tears.
