Suzie sat quietly, letting Mia's words sink in. A heavy wave of sadness washed over her.
That was the exact phrase. A fragile ego.
When she pictured Jamie's face yesterday in the parking garage, his mocking smirk when she talked about her happy life, it was nothing but pure, unchecked possessiveness.
Years ago, he had essentially kept her under house arrest at the Baylor Manor. When his friends visited, he had degraded her, forcing her to play the role of a servant.
He didn't love her back then, and he certainly didn't miss her now. He was simply furious that she had dared to move on. The idea of her being with another man was an insult to his pride, a reality he refused to accept.
Suzie let out a deep breath. Why was she even wasting brain cells analyzing his motives? It was ridiculous.
She had learned exactly how he felt about her the day they got married. The truth had always been crystal clear.
A sudden scoff escaped her lips. She sat up straighter, her voice ringing with newfound energy.
"That was an excellent story, Mia. I learned a lot today."
Suzie swiftly shut down her computer, stood up, and grabbed her purse. Her tone was bright and decisive.
"We are officially done stressing over toxic men. Come on. Lunch is on me. We are going to the most expensive restaurant in Mornhaven and treating ourselves."
Mia pumped a fist in the air. "Now that is the fearless boss I know and love! Let's go!"
An hour later, Suzie and Mia arrived at Feast of Dreams.
As the heavily carved doors were pulled open by a sharply dressed host, the interior truly lived up to its name.
Soft, melodic jazz drifted through the air. The ambient lighting shifted in warm, romantic hues, reflecting beautifully off the polished marble floors.
Mia shot her a look of pure awe. Suzie never let anything faze her.
As they followed the host to their table, Suzie's gaze swept over the dining room. It was packed with couples enjoying romantic dates.
Back when she was just a student with a massive crush on Jamie, she used to dream of moments like this.
She used to fantasize about him taking her to a candlelit dinner, going for evening strolls in the park, traveling the world together.
She had dreamed of a thousand different futures with him.
Not a single one of them had come true.
But things were different now. She had her own money, her own career, and her own life. She was going to make every single one of those dreams a reality, either by herself or with her beautiful children.
