Suzie patted the waiter on the shoulder. "Go back to work," she said warmly. "You did a good job."
The young man gave her a bright, youthful smile. "It was great meeting you. Could I get your number?"
"Sure," Suzie agreed cheerfully with a nod.
She had just pulled out her phone to share her contact info when Jamie suddenly grabbed the back of the waiter's collar, hauling him out of the way.
"Are you harassing a female customer during your shift?" Jamie demanded.
Reporting corruption was one thing—an act of righteous bravery—but it was still the middle of his shift.
Faced with the overwhelming, dominant presence of his boss, the young waiter faltered.
He didn't actually want to lose his job. The working environment was nice, and the pay was excellent.
He shoved his phone back into his pocket, muttered a quick apology, and practically sprinted away.
The second the kid took off, Suzie went back to treating Jamie as if he were completely invisible. She held her payment screen out to the cashier.
"Are you still charging me that seating fee?"
"N-no, ma'am," the cashier stammered, looking utterly mortified.
Her eyes kept darting nervously toward Jamie.
After watching the entire interaction, it was painfully obvious that this woman had some complicated history with the owner. The poor cashier was too terrified to even lift the scanner.
Just as Suzie opened her mouth to rush her, Jamie's deep, magnetic voice rumbled right next to her ear.
"It was great meeting you. Could I get your number?"
Suzie leveled a deadpan stare at him.
The man was absolutely out of his mind.
Ignoring him entirely, she turned to Mia. "Do you have any cash?"
Mia shook her head helplessly.
Watching the intense standoff between the two, the cashier realized this woman possessed an unimaginable level of audacity.
She had just blocked Jamie with absolute defiance.
Countless people would kill for that man's personal contact information.
And strangest of all, Jamie didn't even look angry.
The cashier voiced a very careful question. "Sir... what should I do?"
"Comp the meal," Jamie replied smoothly, his intense stare never leaving Suzie's face.
Suzie gripped her phone, her voice dripping with mockery. "Wow, how incredibly generous of the big boss. Maybe I should book all our company dinners here from now on, since we can just eat for free."
"You are welcome anytime," Jamie murmured. A dark, seductive smile curved his lips as he looked at her with lazy amusement.
Suzie gave him a disgusted once-over. "You really are out of your mind."
Before anyone could react, Suzie reached across the counter, snatched the barcode scanner from the cashier's hand, and pulled the trigger against her own phone screen.
