Suzie exhaled sharply. This was classic Jamie.
Fly back immediately, my foot. Aaron was completely brainwashed.
"Fine," Suzie snapped, her voice laced with ice, and hung up.
She tossed her phone onto the desk, rubbing her face in exhaustion. "Mia, could you get me a black coffee? Make it strong."
"Right away!" Mia scurried out of the room.
The moment the door clicked shut, Suzie's phone buzzed with a text message.
Ms. Sterling, it's almost quitting time.
Suzie stared at the screen, her stomach dropping. Chester Lambert. She had completely forgotten he was still waiting in the lounge.
She quickly typed a reply. Mr. Lambert, I am so sorry. An emergency business meeting just came up. I have to cancel dinner. If you don't mind, you're welcome to stay and have a staff meal here.
Leaning back in her chair, she felt a wave of guilt. She had promised the kids she'd be home for dinner tonight. Another broken promise.
A few minutes later, Mia walked back in with a steaming mug—and Chester was right behind her.
"I have to say, Ms. Sterling, leaving me out there all afternoon is just cruel," Chester teased as he strolled into the office.
Spotting the delicate coffee cup in Mia's hands, he smoothly plucked it from her grasp.
"Hey, that's Suzie's!" Mia protested, her voice pitching up.
Chester shrugged, leaning back. "Hey, work comes first. I'm just giving you a hard time. I don't mind waiting for you."
He casually looked around the sleek office before smoothly pivoting the conversation. "You know, I never would have guessed Suzanne had plastic surgery. I mean, seeing you up close, there are definitely differences, but whoever did her face is a genius. By the way, do you have any idea where she lives?"
Suzie gave him a sideways glance as she clicked her mouse. A moment later, she forwarded a file from her computer to her phone, then shot it over to Chester.
"That's everything we have on her. If you track down her address, let me know."
Chester frowned, tapping on his screen to open the file. "You seem pretty invested in finding her."
Suzie leaned back, her expression unreadable. "Someone is walking around wearing my face. Wouldn't you be?"
