Suzie's eyes involuntarily flicked to the files on the table.

"You don't need to look at those," Jamie's voice cut through her thoughts. "They won't hold up in court. In fact, presenting fake documents will only lead to heavier penalties."

Suzie swallowed hard, forcing herself to maintain eye contact. "If you haven't even read the file, how do you know it's fake?"

A faint smirk touched Jamie's lips. Without a word, he picked up a different manila folder—one that had been sitting on his side of the table the whole time—and handed it to her.

Suzie took it hesitantly and opened the cover.

It was an official household registration document from the local police department. Hayden's file.

How did he get this?! Suzie's hands began to tremble despite her best efforts to keep them still.

"You're the mother of the Sugar Buddies kids, aren't you?" Jamie's voice was a low, magnetic hum.

The question hit her like a physical blow. Her free hand, hidden beneath the table, grabbed fistfuls of her skirt. She stayed silent. Did he know he was the father? Would he try to take them from her?

"Who is their father?"

The question was so casual, so devoid of anger or accusation, that it threw her completely off balance.

Jamie frowned slightly, looking suddenly very serious. "Before I do, I need to know one thing. What exactly is your relationship with Hayden Wycliffe?"

Suzie glared at him. This was the perfect opportunity to set the record straight. He was only targeting Hayden because his bruised ego couldn't handle the thought of her being with another man.

"He is my boss, and I am his employee," Suzie said icily. "Or you can call us business partners. But since you have a pathological need to assume the worst of people, I'm sure my answer means nothing to you."
